Our namesake is
Lord of the Heavens, Baal Shamen in Phoenician, and
Baal Shemin in Aramaic.
He is the chief deity of most of the Semitic people occupying the eastern Mediterranean, and was even worshipped in both Egypt and Rome.
Baal Shamin is king of the gods, after having seized kingship from another deity, Yamm the sea god.
He is the prince and the Lord of the earth, the rain and the dew, who fought against Mot, the god of death, sterility and drought.
Depending on the outcome of this fight, a cycle of seven years of fertility and abundance or drought and famine will follow.
Syria
The
diversity is striking, and Syria has it all, whether it is the
prehistoric relics from our deep past or more recent fruit of
human activity, such as, the achievements of the Phoenicians,
Mesopotamians and of those people in between. More recent than
that are the Greek, Roman and Arab contributions in the making
of history.
We will take you time-traveling through the millennia to where it all began. to
Mari, Dura Europos and to
Ugarit to witness the dawning of the first alphabet, which will later be transmitted, with
Cadmus in search for his sister
"Europa" to Europe to become the source of the alphabet as we know it now. We will also take you to places that are a living testimony over the continuity of history; where you will be able to discover our common heritage, layer by layer.
No wonder Shakespeare made this part of the world the setting for many of his eternal dramas. It is this kind of a cultural tour you had always had in wind, and now, we will oblige. You will find a combination of the luxury and effluence of the West, with the mystery and charm of the East, of antiquity and modernity, of desert hardship and Arab hospitality, and we promise you a rewarding experience.
